Modern skyscrapers and towering apartment blocks dominate the skyline, but just a quarter of a century ago Shanghai was a much different place.

Even today in this modern metropolis, tight alleyways and vast empty spaces still abound and you can find ordinary people leading ordinary lives, far removed from the glitzy postcard view from the Bund.
